MICHELANGELOOne of the most value and successful artists of all time isMichelangelo. Although he was born in Caprese, a small village near Arezzo,Michelangelo grew up in Florence. His father was Ludovico Buonarroti, aFlorentine official with connections to the ruling Medici family. At the age ofthirteen, Michelangelo was placed as an apprentice in the workshop ofDomencio Ghirlandaio. He then studied at the scuplture school in the Medicigardens. He was then invited into the Medici home where he met the iiMedici boys who would later become Popes Leo X and Clement VII. Michelangelo produced two sculpts turn in the House of Medici, the Battleof the Centaurs and the Madonna on the Stairs, both of which were entirebetween 1489 and 1492. Michelangelo had several successes in his life of painting, designerure,and sculpting. His first large-scale mold was Bacchus. Around the sameyear of 1498, Michelangelo did the marble Pieta, which he finished earlier theage of twenty-five and is th e only work he ever signed. This sculpture shows ayouthful Mary with her dying son Jesus move across her lap. Marys expressionis one of resignation kinda then grief. Another of his greatest works in the largemarble sculpture David, which he produced between 1501 and 1504. Theexpression on Davids brass instrument is termed terribilita, a characteristic of manyMichelangelos figures. He was later called back to Rome by Pope Julius II in1505 for two duties. First, Michelangelo particoloured the frescoes on the ceiling ofthe Sistine Chapel. For nearly three years Michelangelo painted hypocrisy on hisback on scaffolding. His second duty was to paint night club scenes from Genesis onthe vault of the papel chapel, which include God Separating Light fromDarkness, the establishment of Adam, the Creation of Eve, the Temptation and Fall ofAdam and Eve, and the Flood. Before the assignment of the Sistine Chapel,Michelangelo had been order by Pope Julius II to make the popes tomb. In 1536,Michelangelo started the break Judgment for the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel. The largest fresco of the Renaissance, the project was completed in 1541. Throughout Michelangelos life of painting and sculpting, his crownacheivement as an intriguer was his work at St. Peters Bascilica where hebecame chief architect in 1546.
